My sister, Kellie, had a colonoscopy that afternoon. She called me with the results and said that the dr. had found a tumor and he was 99.9% positive it was malignant. In that moment, my world stopped. My heart sank.
Throughout my life, cancer has been something that other people had, not my people. While my grandmother and my aunt had breast cancer, it had been discovered very early in the disease and they were both cured with surgery and minimal radiation and continued on with their normal lifestyles as if the diagnosis didn't exist.
For some instinctive reason, I knew in that moment on May 14, that my sister's story would be a bit more. And I was terrified for her and for our families.
We made it through a very depressing/anxiety-ridden weekend and on Monday, May 18, the diagnosis was confirmed through pathology. She has colorectal cancer; specifically, the tumor is located in her rectum which is the lower part of your colon. She is 50 years old, mother of two, wife, aunt to my children and my very best friend. She is my person, the one I call to chat with, the one I go to for advice, the calm to my storm.....she is my biggest fan.
On Wednesday, June 3, Kellie had a biopsy of a nodule located on her lung. The cancer has metastasized to her lungs per the results of the biopsy.
I am devastated. She is scared yet so strong. We know that God is bigger than any of this and we trust that He has gone before Kellie and He will not leave her in this battle. With our diagnosis in our pockets, we are ready to fight. Together, with support for family and friends, we will push forward....I told Kellie we will just have to strap on our big-girl undies and show cancer what she is made of. She is not weak, she is so strong and we are both confident that her treatment will give her a long, prosperous life with her family.
