Just What Are We Doing?

The common question many ask lately is, "How are you all doing?"  It's the question that we ask each other, the question we ask our friends, and the question many healthcare providers are asking their patients.  This pandemic has brought on a lot of emotions from adults as well as children.  Chapman, age 4, asks me daily, "Is the virus gone yet?"  She just wants to go out and get a cookie at the grocery store like we did before all of this mess came about.  Overall, our family has managed well.  We have spent some much needed downtime just getting to know each other better and find things to do that we normally don't have time for.  For instance, P and MK have been doing puzzles.  They found one that their G-Mom gave them a few years ago that has remained untouched until now.....they conquered it and then sent me on a quest to find another one for them to do.  Maddox has found a love for art.  She has been pen pals with her two group leaders at church.  They have two sons and each week the boys write to Maddox and request a drawing.  She has done Elsa, Sonic, Pinkie Pie just to mention a few.  She is a fabulous artist and even announced that maybe one day she will be an art teacher.  Colin has spent many hours practicing his guitar - he received this as a Christmas gift and has been teaching himself how to play ever since.  Pretty amazing.  The two littles have had countless hours to just do what two little sisters should do....play together.  Maryn is Chapman's best friend and, most of the time, Maryn feels the same way.  Ryan went back to work full-time.  Honestly, we all miss him.  Ryan and I have always been a good team so having him home was a special treat.  But, it does feel a little closer to normal now that he goes to work and returns to us for dinner and some family time.
Some of our favorite activities lately have included being outdoors on the canal.....one weekend, we biked the canal.  The boys made it all the way downtown.....we stopped about two miles short, had a snack and biked back together.  We also had the pleasure of borrowing seven kayaks to take out at Betty's Branch - a local spot for kayaking.  The boys hung out mostly with friends and enjoyed jumping from a train trestle/bridge thing - oof! - and swinging into the river via rope swing.  Ryan, myself, and the girls just took it all in.  It's strawberry season and the children all humored me with a trip to a local strawberry patch to pick our own strawberries.  We really need our own patch....we have indulged in many strawberries in the last month.  Our latest at-home outdoor activity has been watching movies at night poolside.  Once we figure out how to conquer the many mosquitos, this will be the best evening summer activity yet!
School is officially over for everyone tho we continue to do math and ELA with Maddox and Maryn.  It is good for the routine.  Pryce came down after he finished his final AP exam and proudly exclaimed, "Well, that was my last exam for the year and now I am officially a Senior!"  He said this with such enthusiasm....while I should be SO excited, I almost cried.  It's time like these that I realize how fast time really does fly and babies don't keep.  This quarantine time has spoiled me in that my family has been together, under one roof, eating meals together daily, and relying on each other for 2 1/2 months.  How often does this really happen in a family of 8?  Rarely is the answer.  Yes, we have a day here and a day there but nothing at all like the past 2 /12 months.  I am thankful for this slowdown because I know that all too soon, the fast pace will begin to crank up again.

Mountain Time

With swim season all finished up, we hopped in the van and headed north to visit Gran and Pop at their mountain cabin.  The mountain air is so much cooler than our standard Georgia July temps so a break away was refreshing.  We managed to squeeze in a bit of ATVing tho there had recently been  a mudslide so going on our typical trails was a bit of a challenge....the girls, sans Chapman, all gave driving the ATVs a try.  Of course, we were holding on as they steered but they did a great job keeping us on the road vs over the cliffs!  The boys are pros so they often take off together for a little ride of their own.....I don't even want to know the details of their excursions due to the amount of worry that would overcome me, lol. We ventured to Gatlinburg midweek and enjoyed the alpine sleds down the mountainside.  I believe I speak for all when I say it is a good visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of our daily grind.  We love being with Gran and Pop and all of their mountainside friends.  People come and go all day at their cabin - most riding a buggy or an ATV.  They are always helping a neighbor or a neighbor is helping them.  Our day in Waynesville never disappoints....Mass General Store for the win every time!  Loads of candy and occasionally we get a good deal on shoes or the like while shopping.  By far my favorite moment was when we went to eat ice cream one evening after watching the sunset over the mountainside.  It was a bit late but we hopped in two cars and began the journey.  Halfway down, Gran is FaceTiming us yet she has no idea how she has managed to do this.....we really had no idea where we were going, we just knew we wanted ice cream.  We ended up at this little shop, we all got our cones, enjoyed them and, as we were leaving, we decided to take a picture of the moment.  The shop had this ice cream cone hat and Pop decided to have a little fun with Gran....the pic speaks for itself as there was a lot of laughter at her expense! The NC mountains are always a fun treat to beat the heat and make fun memories that I hope my children will treasure for a lifetime.

Pryce is 18

How is it that something that seems like it happened yesterday, actually happened 18 years ago.
I remember it all.....going to sleep, waking just before midnight and realizing my water had broke, waking Ryan, calling the dr - and the dr said to wait until contractions were 5 minutes apart, calling the neighbors to watch Colin, getting to the hospital in Milford, check-in took what felt like forever because they were making small talk with Ryan about his social security number....meanwhile, I was having contractions just minutes apart at this point, we got to the floor, into a room, the most fabulous nurse ever came to care for me and massage my back, and minutes later, Pryce made is arrival.....funny how two hours from water breaking to birth of your child can seem like forever.
Fast forward 18 years.....
P is all grown up.  He just finished his Junior year of high school in the middle of a pandemic. He is solid in his faith.  He is always up for an adventure. His commitment to school, church, and his family is unwavering.  He loves to serve others.  His laugh is contagious.  He makes us all proud to call him ours.
Being that we are in the middle of a pandemic, his birthday did look a bit different this year but I think he would agree that it was, in fact, a perfect day/weekend.  Saturday, May 2, he spent on the water kayaking with three of his favorite people - Colin, Spencer and Riley.  Following, the four ended their afternoon in our pool with a basketball contest that lasted a few hours and it was so good to see them together for the first time since mid-March when Covid began.
May 3, we awoke and went to spend the day in SC visiting G-Mom, G-Dad, Gran, Pop and Aunt Nellie.  It was so good to see everyone and visit.....again, we had not seen them for 2ish months and all of us needed some time together.  The cherry on top was being able to celebrate Pryce with all of them.
Following our SC visit, we arrived home just in time for a surprise birthday parade to honor Pryce on his special day.  Birthday parades have been the way to celebrate during the pandemic - these allow for celebrating at a distance.  Pryce had insisted I not plan one of these for him....but, when his friend texted and asked if a parade would be good on his special day, I said of course! Pryce was delighted and happy to see his people!
We ended his evening on the porch dining on a special steak dinner.  It was a great ending to a great day with the one who has taught me to relax a little.
